Kath, Minnesota

Founder, Damsel-Semi-Distressed

Meet Kath. A blogger, poet, and follower of Christ. In this week’s feature, Kath talks about living fearlessly unique, finding a friend in God, and learning to cherish His presence.

Q: What does “Confidence Without Compromise” mean to you?

A: To me, it means to be certain of and reliant on God, even when it’s messy. To be in the world but not of it. To know unwaveringly that His heart aches when mine does, but He never keeps my heart in that place. Every moment of every day is God’s arts and crafts time with my heart. Through my humanly cracks and holes, God lets His light shine the most. His power is made perfect in our weakness.

Q: How has your faith given you confidence?

A: I grew up Catholic and my faith was really never anything more than church pews, rosaries, and memorized Hail Marys.

God felt like an acquaintance, and it wasn’t until I was in college that I was introduced to God as a frienda really, really good friend.

Most of my life I have battled against anxiety and depression, and something God has really had His hand on and used to work in me over the years is writing. When I was younger and didn’t really know God intimately, writing became a healing thing for me.

It’s amazing looking back on that time, not even realizing that our clever God was there with me, reaching me in only the way He could. And that’s what gives me confidence, the certainty that God is with me, that’s enough to make me feel like I can move mountains.

Q: What is a go-to Bible verse that you turn to when you need confidence or hope?

A: Luke 12:6-7 (MSG): “What’s the price of two or three pet canaries? Some loose change, right? But God never overlooks a single one. And he pays even greater attention to you, down to the last detail—even numbering the hairs on your head! So don’t be intimidated by all this bully talk. You’re worth more than a million canaries.”

Such an important reminder that God knows each of us so closely and loves us so uniquely, not one more or less, not one forgotten or overlooked.

Q: What encouragement would you give to other young women regarding living for the Lord?

A: I think I would say be who you are. Being uniquely and unapologetically yourself is one of the absolute best ways you can glorify God, because He designed you.

When you walk with confidence in who God made you, people notice something different about you.

[This way,] you are exuding His light in the way that only YOU can. You are a treasure, you are on purpose, and you are so, so, so loved.

The aim of my blog is for it to be a safe place that people can come, read, and leave feeling less alone, even if it was just from reading one word. I write about faith, humanness, searching, and the simple truth that the three are pretty much a packaged deal. There is also an advice section on the blog where I answer questions or just lend an ear to listen. None of us can do this life thing alone. It’s really important to show up in front of each other and say, “Me too, I’m with you, and I’m for you.”

Q: How have you seen God work in your life and the lives of others during your involvement?

A: Writing for me has always been my and God’s special meeting place, a place where I go and feel safe. Whenever I am writing, I can tangibly feel God with me. It’s really, really special when someone tells me that from reading something I wrote, they felt that way, too. This blog reminds me that God uses broken, messy humans, and through them, shares His bold and graceful character.
