Let God Fill in the Details

“Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?”

(Matthew 6:25 NKJV)

The most dreaded moments in college went a little like this: Opening a Word document to write an essay due in five hours and staring at a blank page. Not knowing where to start. Wondering how I’d be able to complete it in a short amount of time. (And probably thinking, Why didn’t I start this earlier?!)

“Blank pages” in our lives give us similar worries. That opportunity you thought was for you, but it passed by. That open door you’ve been praying for, and the door closed. The answer you’ve been seeking out, but it hasn’t come. You thought, This is the beginning of a beautiful story, but it never got written. 

When we’re faced with blank pages, our typical response is to fill them. We get uncomfortable in the waiting and the what-ifs. We wonder if God hears our prayers. We take matters into our own hands. We become a bit restless. We rush. We plan. We panic.

But give God a blank page, and it’s a different story. 

When you let God fill in the blanks of your life, you encounter His best version of your life.

I’ve said this before, and I’ll say it again: I had no part in the most significant and needed blessings that I’ve received. When I needed God’s solutions, I’ve noticed that He very rarely works from my own supply. 

Philippians 4:19 (NKJV) says, “And my God shall supply all your need according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus.”

When you trust God, His riches is the source that you’re receiving from. This means that God supplies your needs from His endless supply, His endless wisdom, and His endless love. (And God’s riches sounds much better than our limited supply/knowledge, right?)

The truth is, God has not worked according to my plan in many ways. And I’m incredibly grateful for that. God has worked on a timeline that’s not synced with mine. God hasn’t answered several prayers I’ve prayed. God has closed the same doors I’ve worked hard to open.

But guess what? God’s timing has led to perfectly timed moments. God has answered my prayers with solutions that blew my solutions out of the water. God has provided people and opportunities I never knew existed. 

With all of this, here’s my message to you:

Don’t get so caught up in filling in the details of your life and that you forget Who’s in control. 

The enemy will try to use our uncertainties about the future and fears of the worst case scenario to distract us. In doubt, we stop trusting God and rush ahead to go our own way. In fear, we become insecure and too paralyzed to make any movements. In uncertainty, we question whether God can carry us through the very things He’s called us to.

You see the tactic? 

Matthew 6:25 (NKJV) reads, “Therefore I say to you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink; nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing?”

For many of us, by the grace of God, we don’t have to worry about what we will eat, drink, or whether we’ll have clothing to wear tomorrow. But we worry about other details of our lives. 

I can’t tell you who you’re going to marry and when, where you should move to next, what you should study in college, or how life will change in the next five years. But I can tell you that if God tells you do not worry about your life, there is a reason for it.

We face disappointment when we want God’s will over ours. It also tends to be our more selfish moments. Instead of considering how we can reflect Christ at work, we focus on what we don’t like about our jobs. Instead of sharing the gospel with our friends, we worry about how we might be seen by them. Instead of figuring out how to better serve in this season, we talk about what we don’t have in this season.

But when you walk in obedience to God’s Word, God fills in the details. When you are concerned with your Father’s will, you’re in good hands; your Father makes sure His will comes to pass.

I encourage you not to worry because God’s plan for your life isn’t so fragile that you can break it. Leave your fears, mistakes, and doubts at your Father’s feet. Let Him supply your needs according to His riches. Let Him handle the details. Let Him change your course. Let God write your story. You just need to follow Him.

So, don’t be afraid when you face a blank page in your life. When you have no options. When you don’t know what to do next. Renew your strength in Him. Pray without ceasing. Get busy by becoming acquainted with His Word and following His commands. 

I’ve learned there’s excitement in uncertainty. There’s comfort in knowing you need God’s help. Because He, the same God who loves you and cares for you, is always on the move. Give God a blank page, and watch Him work.

When you’re down to nothing, God is up to something.
