Learning how to properly care for oily skin can seem tricky. While some people have naturally oily skin, others can cause their skin to produce excess shine from an improper skin care routine. Either way, by making changes to your routine, you can manage your skin, reduce excess shine (especially if you have an oily T-Zone), and take care of acne. Here are three effective ways to get started:

Cleanse Your Skin Properly
When it comes to oily skin, washing your face the right way can make a difference in your skin’s health and appearance. You should wash your face regularly in the morning and at night, to give your face a clean start every day. Be mindful of the products that you use. Avoid soaps with a fragrance, especially if you have sensitive skin, as they irritate and dry out the skin, which causes it to produce more oil. Excess oil can clog your pores and cause unwanted breakouts. Also, use warm water, not hot water, to cleanse without drying out the skin. Avoid using rough washcloths, harsh scrubs, or tough exfoliators to wash your face as they can cause irritation as well.
Use the Right Serum
Using a serum as part of your daily skin routine is a great way to achieve a healthy glow. Not sure which one to choose? There are many different types of serum that target various skin issues. Do your research and pick the product that best suits your skin type and the problems you’re facing. If you have oily skin and often suffer from acne, look for a serum that contains salicylic acid, an ingredient that helps to control breakouts. Or, simply look for serums for oily skin, which are made to target issues you regularly face.
Use the Right Moisturizer
Moisturizers can improve or worsen your oily skin, so choose wisely! A thick, greasy moisturizer may give your skin a shinier appearance. So, avoid products designed for people with dry skin and look for moisturizers for oily skin. For example, a gel moisturizer for oily skin will give your skin the moisture it needs without making it look greasy. Also, be mindful of your application–a little goes a long way. When you’re applying moisturizer, start off with a small amount for your entire face to avoid excess shine.
Try Blotting Papers When Needed
If you’re on the go, blotting papers can soak up excess oil from your skin. While they don’t treat the root cause of oily skin, blotting papers help to rid of a shiny T-Zone when you need a quick fix. Try using them on clean skin only; using blotting papers throughout the day without cleansing your skin first can rub dirt and oil into your pores, which can clog them.
Oily skin doesn’t have to be a hassle. By incorporating these steps in your routine, you can find effective ways to manage excess oil and keep your skin clear.
